golfing2 1

One might be forgiven for thinking that north Devon with its glorious coastline and it beautiful rolling hills and deep wooded valleys has more than its fair share of good things.

Then there’s the golf.

The sheer variety of golf courses within 10 miles of Sunnymeade, has to be seen to be believed

Golf Courses

Saunton Golf Club – Saunton offers two challenging 18 hole championship standard links courses, East and West. Golf has been played at Saunton for more than 100 years and has played host to many prestigious amateur championships.

Royal North Devon Golf Club – (sometimes known as Westward Ho!) is the oldest Links Course in England. The course represents a true test of golf with a huge timber fronted bunker, burn and ditches which present a formidable challenge.

Ilfracombe Golf Club – High above, and overlooking the Bristol Channel; a course to test the best and delight the rest! Lush fairways, tempting greens, and a sometimes unpredictable wind all provide the ingredients for pure pleasure or utter despair. The nineteenth hole has a well-stocked bar where you can either celebrate or drown your sorrows.

Willingcott Valley Golf Club – The whole courses is incredibly picturesque with far reaching rural views over the pretty village of West Down as far as the eye can see the Brendon Hills.

At 5795 yards off the yellow trees the course is approachable for most golfers but off the white tees, the back nine holes, measuring over 3300 yards with water everywhere, offers a daunting challenge

Barricane Beach

Barricane Beach2 1

Barricane beach (also known as Combesgate beach) not only offers a picturesque landscape tucked in between the rocks but is famous for cowries and other exotic sea shells. These shells have travelled off the shore of a Caribbean island thousands of miles across the Atlantic to be dropped in near-perfect condition in this tiny little inlet on the North Devon coast.

This explains the Caribbean origins of the beaches name 'Barricane' and its designation of a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Set in a bay half a mile from the main Woolacombe beach Barricane Bay is great for rock pooling and popular among surfers. Despite the lack of lifeguards there are some good coastal walks towards Mortehoe and the water quality is MCS Recommended.

With shops available car parking available near the beach and dogs permitted from October to April and on a lead in May to September; this is a great place for swimmers and surfers alike however the beach is not accessible at high tide when it transforms into a natural pool. Good for shells.

Location: Just along the coast from Woolacombe Beach, Mortehoe, Woolacombe, England
